SANCTUARY
Nestled in the woods of the idyllic Boğaziçi University campus in Istanbul, Turkey, sixty-six dogs are fed, housed and lovingly cared for. Defne Arsoy and Ahmet Çolak manage the facility. Tentative plans for an upgrade of the facility reflect the university's understanding that stray animals are part of the community and it is in everyone's best interest when they are healthy and treated with compassion, respect and kindness.

Who can become a foster family
Our sanctuary provides shelter, food and health care for sixty-six lovable dogs. Whether you are individual, a group of friends of colleagues, or an institution, this program offers an ideal opportunity to people who would like to have a dog, but cannot keep one at home; families who are considering adopting a pet and want to spend finding the perfect match; parents who wish to instil in their children a love for animals and sense of responsibility; or residents who simply want to improve their community by contributing to the health and well-being of stray animals.
As a Foster Family, you will make a monthly donation of 300 TL per month for the dog of your choice. If you are unable to visit the dogs in person, one can be selected for you, but you are invited to the sanctuary to meet them all and select the one that is right for you. Once you are comfortable with each other, you can walk your dog or groom its fur and shower it with love and attention. Some of our Foster Families are unable to visit the sanctuary, some do not even live in Turkey, but with your donation, you can still join the program and make a significant contribution to the well-being of your dog. You will receive regular updates on your dog’s condition, progress, and current events at the sanctuary.

Instead of buying a dog as a gift for a birthday, graduation or other special occasion, consider giving a donation in the name of the friend or loved one, whom you want to honor. This can be a one-time donation or a regular contribution to the Foster Family Program. What a lovely gift it is to know that a donation in your name is supporting the well-being of a dog and helping solve the problem of animal homelessness.
A number of our donors and Foster Families give in the name of animal-loving friends and relatives who have passed away to honor their memory. Among these is Ataman Arsoy, whose life-time devotion to rescue animals was central to the upbringing of our volunteer coordinator, Defne Arsoy. His compassion for animals and influence on his daughter are at the heart of BU Paws and the Foster Family Program.
Many businesses participate in charitable activities to improve the community. Donating through your office is a great way to give. There are tax advantages available for institutional donations to our non-profit foundation. Talk to the Social Responsibility officer at work about including BU Paws in giving campaigns. If your office is not set up to do this, another option is for a group of interested colleagues to join together and pool funds to form a Foster Family for a dog.

VOLUNTEERS
Are you a dog lover whose heart is broken by the sight of homeless animals on the streets?
Do you want to make your community a happier, safer place by taking care of the strays?
Are you someone who wants a dog, but cannnot keep one at home?
BU Paws Dog Sanctuary is a good place for you!
Our animals are fed and cared for, what they need most from volunteers is individual attention and affection. Socialization is essential for harmonious co-existence with human beings and a good relationship with the community. Volunteers have given their talents and time to train, bathe and walk the dogs, clean the facilities, pick up trash, create dog spaces, prune bramble, and install fencing. They accompany dogs to veterinary appointments and help with physical therapy exercises. They organize fund raising and goods collections, recruit donors and more volunteers. They create material for canine environment enrichment and devise brain work activities to stimulate the dogs' minds. They manage bi-lingual social media, build up our photo archive, design our website, calendars, and public relations materials. Tremendous changes have taken place at BU Paws over the last two years in no small part thanks to the contributions of animal-loving volunteers.
ADOPT A DOG
If you spend time with our dogs as a volunteer or Foster Family, you may find yourself becoming very attached to one that you'll want to bring home. By adopting a stray dog, you will help reduce animal homelessness and win the heart and eternal loyalty of one of the best friends you'll ever have.
All of our dogs have been registered, microchipped, vaccinated against rabies, and have been issued health passports. All females and the majority of males have been neutered. Many of them already respond to voice commands, but all are intelligent animals that want to please and can be trained.
